6 Reasons Why People Fail The Life Insurance Exam

There are a lot of articles and videos out there that are dedicated to teaching or explaining to you on “how to pass”, and they’re great, and much needed, however we’re going to look at a little bit of a different angle on this article - Why people fail their insurance license exam and how to avoid these pitfalls.
Life insurance License Exam

Over the years, we’ve had thousands of students enroll in our courses to study and prepare to take their license exam. While most students pass their exam, and then go on to get their life and/or health insurance license, the odds are that some candidates will unfortunately fail their exam. It’s the law of average combined with human nature. And it happens to the best of us.

In that time, we’ve had the opportunity to speak to some students that have failed their license exam in an attempt to get them back on track so that they can make another attempt to pass their exam. We have been able to analyze not only the data available to us, but also a little bit of the psychology involved with candidates who have failed. We can discover a lot just by having discussions.

The below information is information that we’ve collectively compiled over many years to point out to you the common reasons why students might fail an exam, and to help you avoid these pitfalls.

Why: Anxiety and Nerves

Solution: Turn Nerves into Excitement

We all get nervous before and during something challenging. To counter the anxiety and nerves, understand why you’re nervous – don’t be nervous that you’re going to fail, think about why passing the exam is so important to you and visualize obtaining your license and having a great career in insurance sales. Turning the anxiety towards positive thoughts will turn those nerves into excitement. And to be cliché, what doesn’t hurt us will make us stronger.

Why: Lack of Strategy

Solution: Develop A Strategy (or strategies) While Studying

A lot of people study in their own particular way, but then don’t employ those strategies or styles while taking an exam. If you have any habits, rituals, or strategies that you use while studying, bring those (if possible) to the exam. This will allow you to be more comfortable with the exam and allow consistency.

Why: Time Management

Solution: Don’t Waste Too Much Time On One Question

We’ve probably all been guilty of spending too much time on one (or more) question during a test. It’s either that we don’t understand the question or that we’re not familiar with the subject. While the license exam is timed, you do have sufficient time to complete the exam, however if you spend too much time on several questions, you will start to cut it close. Use your smarts to choose what you think is the best common-sense answer if you’re lost on a question. In most states, the passing grade is 70%, so you do have a little wiggle room.

Why: Not Reading The Question

Solution: Read Each Question Thoroughly and Be Careful With The “EXCEPT” Kind of Questions

We’ve heard some students admit that they rushed through the exam (likely due to being nervous) and when you hurry through the exam, you tend not to read questions thoroughly, thus creating a chance to choose the incorrect answer option. The license exam will not present “trick” questions, and they not purposely trying to trip you up, but you do have to understand the question to have the best chance to correctly answer it. Also, you will see some questions that use the “except” style of question, where three of the answers are true, but one of them is not true. Take your time and be very careful with these kinds of questions. They tend to get everyone.

Why: Not Being Prepared For The Exam

Solution: Study, Study, Study

This might be one of our biggest pet peeves. Before you take your exam, be sure that you have completed your study course in a reasonable amount of time (we know life happens, and you may get derailed or stalled) and then schedule your exam as soon as possible after you’ve completed your studying, so that you retain the information that you have just learned.

Why: Wrong Mindset

Solution: You’re a winner if you want to be a winner

(Our little pep talk for you, but it’s all true) We’re human, and we tend to sometimes be vulnerable and even get down on ourselves. But, when it counts, you need to be proud of yourself. You should understand that you’re smart, you’re capable, and you can do this. Creating a positive mindset is more important than you think. Beginning and taking your exam with a positive mindset may just be the force that propels you into greatness.
