How To Get A Louisiana Life and Health Insurance License

Obtaining your Louisiana life and/or health license is the first step in becoming an insurance agent in Louisiana. LA has a simple process and we'll breakdown the steps for you below.

1. Complete an Insurance Pre-License Study Course

Before you take the life or health insurance licensing exam, it’s important to make time to gain the knowledge you’ll need to pass this exam on your first attempt. Studying an online pre-license study course will provide you with the necessary knowledge and information you’ll need to pass your license exam.

An online study course provides you with very specific insurance industry knowledge that will be used during the license exam. Online study courses are self-study and include study material, such as simulated exams, quizzes, summary videos, and flashcards.

2. Pass The License Exam

After you complete your online prep course, it’s time to take the life & health insurance exam. Louisiana's license exam provider is PSI Exams. The insurance exam outline contains a total of 100 scored questions (for life or health – 150 for the life & health combo), which cover topics that are outlined in the training course.

3. Get Fingerprinted

After you pass the insurance exam, you must get a fingerprinted for a background check from PSI Exams. The fee for fingerprinting services is $39.25. This covers your entire background check.

You won’t need to schedule an appointment; you can submit your fingerprints electronically at one of the LA PSI sites at the time of your exam.

4. Submit a License Application

After you pass the exam and complete your background check, you can then apply for your license through the online NIPR website. The application fee is currently $75 plus a $5.60 transaction fee.
