How To Get Your South Carolina Life and Health Insurance License

Getting a South Carolina life and health insurance license is the first step in becoming a life or health insurance agent in South Carolina. South Carolina has a simple process and we'll breakdown the steps for you below.

Complete a South Carolina Insurance Exam Prep Course

Before you take the South Carolina life or health insurance license exam, it’s important to make time to gain the knowledge you’ll need to pass this exam on your first attempt. Studying an online exam prep course will provide you with the needed knowledge and information you’ll need to pass your license exam.

An online prep course provides you with very specific insurance industry knowledge that will be used during the license exam. There is very little information on the exam that could be considered “common sense”. Online prep courses are self-study and include study material, such as simulated exams, quizzes, summary videos, and flashcards.

Take A Life and Health Insurance License Exam

After you complete your SC online prep course, it’s time to take the SC life & health insurance exam ($59). South Carolina's license exam provider is Pearson Vue. The life & health insurance exam contains a total of 140 scored questions, which cover topics that are outlined in the training course.

If you happen to fail the South Carolina life and health insurance exam, you can schedule a second attempt within 24 hours after your first attempt.

Submit an Insurance License Application

After you pass the exam and complete your background check, you can then apply for your license through the online NIPR website.

We recommend that you create a user account on South Carolina’s Industry Access portal where you can manage your online license documents.

Background Check

After you have applied for the resident producer license, you will receive an email with the directions on how to schedule a fingerprint appointment.

Resident producers are required to submit fingerprints for all NEW license applications.

Once your fingerprints have been successfully submitted and processed, you do not need to be re-fingerprinted with future license renewals.

Fingerprints should only be obtained after or at the time of application for NEW resident producer applications.

Track Your Application

After you complete all of the above steps, you can check your application status by creating and logging into your SC DOI account. Once your license has been approved and issued, you can print your license from the Industry Access portal or the NIPR website.
