How to Get a Massachusetts Life and Health Insurance License

If you plan to sell life and health insurance in Massachusetts, you’ll need to secure the state’s Life and Health Producer License first. This guide walks you through every step, from preparing for the exam to submitting your license application.

1. Confirm You Meet the Basic Eligibility Requirements

Before starting the licensing process, it’s important to confirm that you meet Massachusetts’ basic eligibility standards. You must be at least 18 years old to apply. You do not have to live in Massachusetts, but you must apply under the correct resident or non-resident license type. In addition, the state will review your background as part of the application process, including criminal, financial, and regulatory history. Taking a few minutes to verify eligibility upfront can help prevent unnecessary delays later.

2. Prepare Seriously for the Licensing Exam

Massachusetts does not require a pre-licensing course, but that does not mean the exam is easy. The Life and Health exam covers a broad range of material, including policy structures, health coverage basics, ethics, and both federal and Massachusetts-specific insurance laws. Many candidates underestimate the depth of the exam and struggle as a result.

Using a structured study plan with practice questions helps reinforce concepts, improve retention, and significantly increases your chance of passing.

3. Know What to Expect From the Background Review

As part of your license application, you must complete background-related questions for the Massachusetts Division of Insurance. You’ll be asked to disclose any criminal convictions, past regulatory actions, or disciplinary issues involving professional licenses. Honesty is critical. Even minor issues must be disclosed if asked. The Division evaluates applications individually and may request additional documentation or a written explanation before making a final decision on your eligibility.

4. Schedule and Pass the State Licensing Exam

Massachusetts insurance exams are administered by Prometric. You can register online or by phone and choose a testing center and date that fits your schedule. The Life and Health license requires passing two separate exam sections: Life and Accident & Health.

Each section is multiple-choice, timed independently, and requires a passing score of 70 percent or higher. You’ll receive your results immediately, allowing you to move forward without delay if you pass.

5. Apply for Your License After Passing

Once you’ve passed both exam sections, the final step is submitting your license application. Most applicants apply through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR), though you may also apply directly through the Massachusetts Division of Insurance. You’ll pay the required fees, submit exam results, and complete all background disclosures.

After final review, the Division will issue your license if everything is in order, allowing you to legally begin working as a producer.

Final Thoughts

Earning your Massachusetts Life and Health Insurance License is very achievable with the right preparation and expectations. Even without mandatory pre-licensing, disciplined study and an organized approach make a significant difference. By understanding each step in advance and preparing consistently, you can move through the process efficiently and start your insurance career with confidence.
