How to Get a Nevada Life & Health Insurance License
In Nevada, individuals who want to sell life insurance, health insurance, or both must obtain a Nevada Life & Health Insurance License. This license provides the legal authority to represent insurance companies, sell insurance products, or operate as an independent insurance agent.
With this license, agents may help individuals and families protect against financial loss due to death, illness, disability, or medical expenses. The license also opens the door to a wide range of career paths, including working for captive agencies, independent brokerages, or building a self-employed insurance business.
1. Pre-Licensing Education
Nevada does not currently require candidates to complete a pre-licensing education course as a matter of law for many insurance licenses. However, choosing to complete a Nevada Life and Health insurance study course is strongly recommended and has a meaningful impact on exam success.
Most candidates elect to take an online prep course because it provides structured lessons, practice questions, and exam-focused explanations. These courses are designed to mirror the content tested on the state licensing exam and help students study efficiently rather than guessing what to focus on.
Industry data consistently shows that preparation matters. Candidates who complete a formal prep course typically see first-time pass rates in the 65–70% range. In contrast, individuals who do not study at all, or study only minimally, tend to experience much lower success rates, often closer to 40–45%, particularly for the Life & Health exam, which covers multiple lines of insurance and state-specific regulations.
While pre-licensing education is optional in Nevada, skipping exam preparation significantly increases the risk of failing and having to retake the exam.
2. Schedule Your Exam
Nevada insurance licensing exams are administered by Pearson VUE, the state’s approved testing provider. Candidates must register for their exam directly through the Pearson VUE website.
Exam fees vary depending on whether you are testing for a single line (life only or health only) or multiple lines (life and health together). During registration, you will be able to select your exam type, testing location, and preferred exam date.
Pearson VUE may also offer online proctored exams, allowing candidates to test from home under specific conditions. Availability can change, so it is important to review the Pearson VUE website for the most current options, system requirements, and testing rules.
3. Background Check
Nevada requires all insurance license applicants to complete a criminal history background check, which includes digital fingerprinting. Fingerprints are used to verify identity and review any criminal history that may affect eligibility for licensure.
There is a separate fingerprinting fee, and fingerprints must be taken by an approved fingerprint vendor. Using an unapproved provider can delay or invalidate your application, so it is important to confirm vendor eligibility before scheduling fingerprinting.
The background check must be completed as part of the licensing process, and results are submitted directly to the state.
4. Submit Your Application
After successfully passing the licensing exam and completing the background check, you may submit your license application to the state of Nevada. Applications are filed electronically through one of the state-approved third-party systems, such as Sircon or NIPR.
During the application process, you will provide personal information, confirm exam completion, and answer background-related questions. Once submitted, the Nevada Division of Insurance will review your application and issue your license if all requirements have been met.
Timeline
Here’s a rough idea of how long each part may take, assuming you follow the process efficiently:
✔ Prep course: From a few days to a few weeks, depending on your schedule and how long you study each session.
✔ License exam: Once you feel ready, you can schedule your license exam (subject to availability of test centers or online proctoring).
✔ Background check / fingerprinting: May take a few days to a week.
✔ Application & license issuance: In many cases, once all requirements are met, license approval can take a couple of days. The exact time depends on state processing timeline.
