How to Get a Life and Health Insurance License in Missouri

Starting a career as a life and health insurance agent can open the door to great income and professional opportunities. To begin selling policies, you’ll need to earn your Missouri Life and Health Insurance Producer License

Here’s a clear step-by-step guide to help you through the process and get started in your career.

Step 1: State Requirements

Before you begin, make sure you are eligible:

  • Age: Be at least 18 years old.
  • Residency: Both residents and non-residents can apply
  • Character: Missouri reviews your background for criminal, financial, or professional license issues.

Step 2: Complete A Pre-Licensing Education

You can take these courses online. Completing a study course will greatly increase your chances of passing the license exam. At the end of the course, you’ll receive a certificate of completion that you can present when scheduling your exam.

We offer strategic and comprehensive study tools & practice exams to increase your pass rate.

Step 3: Pass the State Licensing Exam

The Missouri insurance licensing exams are administered by Pearson VUE. You can register online or by phone once your pre-licensing course is complete.

  • Exam Format: Multiple-choice questions
  • Passing Score: 70% (or better)
  • Time Limit: 2.5 hours

Bring your certificate of completion and two forms of ID to the testing center. You’ll receive your results immediately after the test.

Step 4: Apply for Your License

Once you’ve passed you license exam, submit your application through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR)

You will need to:

  • Pay the state licensing fee
  • Provide your exam results
  • Answer background check questions truthfully

Missouri conducts a background review to verify your eligibility before granting the license.

Step 5: Keep Your License Active

In Missouri, your license must be renewed every two years. You’ll also need 16 hours of continuing education (CE) each renewal period, with at least 3 hours in ethics.

Bottom Line:

With the right preparation and motivation, you can move from enrollment in a course to holding your Missouri Life and Health Insurance License in just a few weeks. Consistent study and full compliance with state requirements are the keys to starting your insurance career strong.
