How To Get A North Carolina Life, Accident & Health & Sickness Insurance License
If you looking to get licensed in NC, you’ll be licensed to help people protect their families, health, and financial future, as well as enjoying a great career. The Life, Accident, and Health license allows you to sell life insurance, health insurance, and accident coverage, or work for an agency doing the same.
Follow these steps to obtain your license:
1: Complete a Pre-Licensing Course
While the North Carolina Insurance Department no longer requires that a candidate complete a pre-licensing course, we highly encourage that you take a course. You’ll need the knowledge and experience in order to successfully pass the license exam.
What to look for in a course:
- Comprehensive reading material covering all aspects of the exam outline
- Includes simulated practice exams
- Offers flashcards
- Has summary lesson videos
- Provides a certificate of completion
2: Schedule and Pass the State Licensing Exam
Once you’ve completed your pre-licensing course, you’re ready to take your licensing exam, which is facilitated by Pearson VUE.
Here’s how to make it easy:
- Go to pearsonvue.com/nc/insurance.
- Choose your exam (Life, Health, or both)
- Pay the fee, usually around $45 per exam
- Choose in-person or online testing
Tip: Review your course material just before your exam. The questions test concepts more than memorization, focus on understanding how policies work and why. Understand the concepts.
3: Get Your Fingerprints Taken
North Carolina requires a background check before you can apply for your license.
Here’s how:
- Schedule fingerprinting through IdentoGO at identogo.com
- Use the North Carolina insurance code: NCDOI
- The fee is usually around $38 to $48
- They’ll automatically send your results to the NCDOI.
4: Apply for Your License
After passing your exam and completing fingerprinting, apply through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR): nipr.com
- Select “Apply for a New License” and follow the prompts for North Carolina Life, Accident & Health.
- Application fee is usually between $50 to $70
