How To Get Your Tennessee Property and Casualty Insurance License
If you’re considering a career in insurance, you’re on the right track. A Tennessee Property and Casualty license gives you the ability to sell auto, home, renters, commercial, and liability insurance. The process isn’t complicated, but there are a few important requirements to take care of along the way.
1. Basic Eligibility Requirements
Tennessee requires you to be at least 18 years old, have a valid Social Security number, and be a resident of the state (if applying for a resident license). You'll also need to be of good character, meaning no felony convictions that would disqualify you under state insurance law.
2. Complete a Pre-Licensing Education Course
While Tennessee does not require you to complete a formal pre-licensing education course before sitting for the P&C exam, that doesn't mean you should walk in unprepared. The exam covers a broad range of material; insurance contracts, policy structures, property and casualty concepts, and Tennessee-specific regulations.
Studying for the TN Property and Casualty license exam is vital to your success.
3. Pass the State Licensing Exam
Once you complete your prep course, you'll need to pass the Tennessee P&C insurance exam, administered by Pearson VUE. The exam has two parts: a national section and a state-specific section.
Exam Information
- 2 hours
- 150 scored questions
- Minimum passing score: 70%
4. Apply for Your License
After passing the exam, you have 12 months to submit your license application through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). The application fee is around $60 for Tennessee residents. You'll also need to authorize a background check as part of the process. Make sure all your information is accurate, discrepancies can slow things down.
Keeping Your License Active
Once licensed, Tennessee requires continuing education (CE) every 2 years to renew. Stay on top of this so your license doesn't lapse.
The whole process, from enrolling in pre-licensing to holding your license, can take as around 3 to 5 weeks. It's a manageable commitment with a solid payoff. Tennessee's insurance market is active, and P&C producers are in consistent demand across the state.
