How To Get A Florida 214 Life Insurance License

Earning your Florida 214 Life Insurance license is a strategic move if you want to build a career helping individuals and families protect their financial futures. The process is structured, but once you understand each step, you can move through it confidently and efficiently. The guide below breaks down exactly what you need to do, from pre-license education to application, so you can get licensed and start working in the life insurance industry.

1. Know What the 214 License Allows You to Sell

The Florida 2‑14 license authorizes you to sell life insurance, fixed annuities, and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) policies. These products form the foundation of personal financial protection, and agents who specialize in them often build long‑term client relationships and recurring business. If you plan to expand into health insurance later, the 2‑14 license is also a natural starting point.

2. Complete the Required PreLicensing Education

Florida requires 30 hours of state‑approved pre‑licensing education for the 2‑14 Life Agent license. Our approved courses are available online (see below), and most candidates choose our online course for flexibility and self‑paced study.

Our 214 prelicensing course includes:

  • State‑specific Florida statutes
  • Life insurance fundamentals and policy types
  • Annuities and retirement products
  • Contract law and underwriting
  • Ethics and consumer protection
  • Practice exams that mirror the state test

3. Submit Your Application and Get Fingerprinted

Unlike many states, Florida requires you to apply for your license before taking the exam. You’ll submit your application through the DFS MyProfile system and pay the required fees. After applying, you must complete fingerprinting and a background check through the state’s approved vendor. This step verifies your identity and ensures you meet Florida’s licensing standards.

It’s best to complete fingerprints early so your background check can process while you prepare for the exam.

4. Schedule and Pass the State Licensing Exam

Once your application is submitted and your course is complete, you can schedule the Florida 2‑14 exam with the state’s testing vendor, Pearson VUE. The exam includes multiple‑choice questions covering both general life insurance concepts and Florida‑specific regulations.

To improve your chances of passing on the first attempt:

  • Review definitions and core concepts
  • Take multiple practice quizzes and exams within our course
  • Focus on Florida statutes, which carry significant weight
  • Use our course’s readiness assessment/final exam to identify weak areas

Passing the exam is your final major hurdle before becoming licensed.

5. Wait for Approval and Begin Your Career

After you pass the exam and your background check clears, DFS will issue your 214 license. You’ll receive confirmation through your MyProfile account, and from there you can begin working with an agency, join a brokerage, or explore independent opportunities.

Remember that Florida requires 24 hours of continuing education every two years, including a 4‑hour Law & Ethics Update, to keep your license active.
