How to Get a Georgia Property and Casualty Insurance License

If you’re thinking about becoming a Property and Casualty (P&C) insurance agent in Georgia, you’re stepping into a field with steady demand, flexible career paths, and plenty of room to grow. Whether you want to work for an agency, launch your own business, or add P&C to your existing insurance credentials, the process is more straightforward than most people expect. Here’s a clear, step‑by‑step guide to help you get licensed without the confusion.

1. Know the Education Requirements

Georgia Insurance Department requires license candidates to complete a pre-licensing course as part of the process.

You’ll need to complete:

  • 8 hours of Property education
  • 8 hours of Casualty education

That’s a total of 16 hours for property and casual, which is far less than what many states require. You can complete these hours through our Georgia Insurance Department approved pre-licensing course.

2. Schedule and Pass the Georgia P&C Licensing Exam

Once you complete your pre‑licensing education, your next step is the state exam. Georgia uses Pearson VUE to administer licensing tests.

Here’s what to expect:

  • One combined exam covering both Property and Casualty
  • Two major sections: general insurance knowledge + Georgia‑specific laws
  • Multiple‑choice format
  • Immediate pass/fail results

The exam isn’t designed to trick you, but it does require focused preparation. The exam becomes much more passable when you’ve studied and prepared properly.

3. Complete Fingerprinting/Background Check

Before you can apply for your license, Georgia requires fingerprinting through Gemalto/Cogent (now GAPS). This is a standard background check used for all insurance professionals.

You’ll schedule your appointment online, visit a fingerprinting location, and your results will be sent directly to the Georgia Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner.

4. Submit Your License Application

After passing the exam and completing your fingerprints, you’re ready to apply for your license through Sircon or NIPR.

You’ll need:

  • Basic personal information
  • Application fee payment

Most applications are processed quickly, and you’ll receive an email once your license is approved.

5. Keep Your License Active With Continuing Education

Georgia requires licensed agents to complete 24 hours of continuing education every two years, including 3 hours of ethics. If you hold multiple lines of authority, your CE requirements don’t stack, you just complete the 24 hours total.

Your Career Starts With One Step

Getting your Georgia Property & Casualty license is one of the fastest ways to enter the insurance industry. With only 16 hours of required education, a single exam, and a streamlined application process, you can be licensed and ready to work in a matter of weeks, not months.

Once you’re licensed, you’ll be equipped to help clients protect their homes, cars, businesses, and financial futures, while building a career with unlimited earning potential.
